This morning with a cup of coffee in my hand, the living Word in the other, I read 1 John 5:13-20. I underlined 6 instances where the words “that you may know” were recorded. John knew his audience, much like us today, experience times of uncertainty, conflicting opinions, and even doubts (yes I admit to doubting now and then).
John says, I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know…
Death need not be final (v 13) …you may know that you have eternal life
God actually listens (v 14) …we know that he hears us in whatever we ask
Freedom from the trap of sin (v 18) …we know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning
The Evil One can’t lay a hand on us (v 20) …we know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
Jesus came that we might understand truth (v 20) …we know that the Son of God has come and given us understanding
Jesus allows us to know him, Living Truth (v 20b) …we may know him who is true and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
What a gift. We’re not rolling the dice, we’re not victims to fate. In a culture where ‘anything goes’ we know Jesus who boldly walks and talks truth directly into that reality.
What do you know? How could what you know change your perspective today?
